Disenchantment

(not my photo)

Disenchantment is the unchanging result of dehumanizing features of bureaucracies that control modern cities. Too much rationalization can lead to disenchantment. Think of an ATM. We have bank tellers yet over the years we have replaced them with ATM's because it has become easier and more efficient for us to use the machine. You often don't even have to go into the building and now they make drive through ATM's where we don't even have to leave our car. Our society is being trained to believe that machines are more efficient than people. The same idea goes for automated telephone assistants and self check out lines. This results in disenchantment. You probably noticed the same photo I included in my last post on rationalization. The purpose of doing so wasn't only to show that the two are closely related or to bring up our best friend Weber. The purpose is to show the time frame that ideas such as  disenchantment and rationalization started being relevant and studied. Weber lived from 1864-1920 and these issues remain relevant today at least 96 years later.
