Looking Glass Self

The looking glass self is a concept created by sociologist Charles Cooley. It states that a persons self develops through our perception of others evaluations of us. How we see ourselves is not determined by who we really are but how we believe others see us. We are more likely to have a higher self esteem if many people seem to like us more or give off the impression that we have favorable traits.
