Folkway

Folkways are norms for routines in casual situations. They are loosely enforced norms that make sure our social interactions go smoothly. Shaking hands before competing with someone, saying "bless you" when someone sneezes, and covering your mouth when coughing are examples of folkways. Breaking a folkway, such as eating applesauce with a fork rather than a spoon, could result in ridicule or judgement. You will not be punished or thought of as a bad person but people will just find you strange. Other examples of breaking folkways include standing facing the other people in the elevator, standing in someone's "personal bubble", or eating with your fingers in a restaurant.
