Dramaturgy

Dramaturgy is a term Goffman used to describe the ways that social interaction relates to a theater where the individuals act a certain way to seem favorable to their audience. For example, at work I might smile and act interested in the customer so that my customers and my boss think that I'm a good worker. In school you might act like you're paying attention so that your professor thinks that you're smart. You might act more wealthy, happy, or interesting on a date to seem like a better suitor.  Dramaturgy takes place in any situation where you act a certain way to seem favorable to others.
